What happens in Baptism?
Through Water and the Word, "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit," a human is made God's child. They receive God's gifts and benefits; 1) the working of forgiveness of sins, 2) delivery from death and the Evil One (Devil), and 3) gives everlasting salvation on all who believe what God's Word and promises declare.

Whoever believes and is baptised, will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. Mark 16:16 (ESV) |
He saved us ... according to His own mercy, by the washing of regeneration of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, so that being justified by His grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy. Titus 3:5-8 (ESV) |
Wonderous are the effects of this simple act - effects produced not by water, but by the Word of God connected with the water. Without the Word of God, the water is simply water and no Baptism. But when connected with the Word of God, it is Baptism, that is, a gracious water of life and a washing of regeneration in the Holy Spirit.

Taught in God's Word through the Apostle Paul that we learn we were buried with Christ by Baptism into death, that just as He was bodily raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also are given to walk in newness of life. The reality of this in life is; as we walk in the grace of our Baptism, the old Adam in us is drowned and destroyed by our daily being sorry for our sins and repent of them, together with all evil lusts, so that a new man (self) may daily come forth and rise, helping us to live in the presence of God as he created us.

We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new live. Romans 6:4 (ESV) Adapted from 'Meditation on Luther's Explanation of Holy Baptsm' in 'Lutheran Boof of Prayer' pp78,79. |
